Studies with an Avian Radar

From 2011 Ornis italica has started three
projects using a Radar adapted to avian studies.
The projects we have been working on concern the
study of bird migration on different Italian islands
and a preliminary study about the risk of avian collision
against aircrafts in the airport of Venice.

Here you can have a look to some of our videos realised on the island of Ponza (Italy)
during a day of high passage of migrating passerines. In this first video you can see
several little flocks of passerines migrating over the island in the early afternoon, in a day of very strong passage. Radar is set up vertically as in the following videos as well.

In this second video you can see hundreds of passerines leaving the island of Ponza just after dusk after a day of very strong passage.
